I just need to rant for a second, please forgive me.
Yesterday I flew DEN-DFW-OKC. The Oklahoma leg was delayed because we were missing a copilot and by the time we got one, DFW was on a weather slowdown. I made it to my site on time only because I’d left an hour and a half buffer to travel 2.5 miles.
Last night I was scheduled for OKC-DFW-MCO. My flight out of Oklahoma was delayed, likely due to a cascade of issues that started on the morning flight. We eventually arrived 3 hours late into DFW and I did not get to Orlando at all.
I convinced American to transfer me to a United flight this morning because I desperately need to be in Tampa for an inspection today. They booked me on DFW-IAH-MCO.
I’m currently sitting on a plane at a gate in Houston with a mechanical issue and I’m ready to scream.
(And for the record, tonight I need to fly MCO-RDU, then RDU-DTW-DEN tomorrow. So ain’t nobody got time for this.)
Update: mechanical issue reportedly fixed, just need to do paperwork to leave. Fingers crossed.

That’s rough.
I was supposed to fly ATL-JFK-SVO-TJM back in April 2014; Delta decided that my flight out of ATL could get delayed until my flight out of JFK was leaving so I missed my connecting flight to Moscow. That was a fun one.

No need to apologize, everyone needs to vent sometimes. I particularly hate travel problems because they make you feel so helpless.
I travel for work quite a bit and I remember a few years ago I was trying to get to Halifax, Nova Scotia from DC and it was one issue after the other - mechanical problem on the plane, plane got fixed, plane was broke again, had to switch to a new plane, weather delay, finally take off for Boston, miss the connecting flight, weather again, stay the night in Boston, etc. It turned a ~6 hour trip into like a 36 hour trip, it was ridiculous. Now almost all the destinations I fly to have a reasonable non-stop option available !

Oof...that’s rough. My father in law flies a lot for work and he avoids Denver, Dallas, and Atlanta if at all possible. So you’re 2 for 3!

Yeah, in theory if I had known how late the OKC-DFW flight was going to be yesterday, I could have rented a car to Dallas and made it to Florida last night. But naturally it was delayed in 20-minute increments. Thankfully I only fly domestic so it’s rare I get stuck more than 12 hours somewhere that’s farther than I want to drive.

Ugh. I was lucky that I had several airport options for my destination and they were willing to help me out. Flying to Moscow on a schedule would be nerve-wracking.

I avoid Chicago and LAX if at all possible. Can’t really avoid Denver

I did the DFW to OKC leg quite a few times going to see the Mrs in our college days. It was rarely ever on time/without issue

I have learned the hard way
that if one needs to go to/from
OKC, the fastest way from DFW is a rental car.

Yea, kind of hard to avoid the airport you fly out of.
We fly out of Chicago whenever we go any where and have yet to have an issue *knock on wood*
I imagine LAX is terrible though as well.

You definitely need to vent. That was the most frustrating part of air travel for me, I could be doing everything right but still end up running late due to things that happened 12 hours ago on a different flight.

That’ s always annoying. I remember one time I got screwed when I’m sitting on the plane at the gate and the crew is telling us on the PA that there’s an issue but it should be fixed soon and we’ll be on our way. Meanwhile the airline is texting everyone saying the flight is canceled, return to the terminal to get reassigned. Being a dummy, I trusted the crew and waited it out, and sure enough we were canceled and by the time I got back to the terminal I had to wait for like a 7 PM flight (this was at like 6:30 in the morning). Thank god for airport bars.
With my current gig I’m only going to one of 3 test sites, and the folks I work with have been doing it long enough they kind of know all the ins and outs of the flight options so it’s very rare anyone gets stuck or anything.

Good luck on the paperwork. I’ve seen that literally take more than an hour.

Luckily I had many hours between my flight in Moscow and Tyumen. I made it to Moscow alright, eventually, but my bag was delayed a couple days.

Ugh. So much connecting for living at a hub and traveling so much. Good luck - hope you get to MCO ( y not TPA?) and beyond!

The universal rule for a mechanical problem is 45 minutes minimum. Sorry for your delays, it happens to all of us. I almost didn’t make it home last week due to weather and you don’t get a free hotel due to weather. The lines at the Alaska customer service counter were very long.

I traveled all over the world for work, every damned week of the year, for 25 years. I now have a job that keeps me local, there’s not enough money to entice me to go back to that life. Fuck travel.

This is why I aim for nonstop flights these days.
Several years ago I had TXL-FRA-YVR-SEA, starting at about 8am on a Monday morning. Departure from FRA was delayed due to wind, agent I chatted with saw my itinerary and laughed, saying I would never make the connection in YVR. He was right, arriving late + customs = missed connection. No big deal right, as there’s a flight every couple hours. Except that day a snowstorm decided to hit SEA and closed the airport, so I was stuck in YVR overnight. Got into SEA around noon on Tuesday, and to top it off, the taxi taking me home (ride bailed due to snow) crashed on 405. What a day.
I learned the lesson for good a couple years later, on a SEA-YVR-FRA-CGN trip, which was massively cheaper with the YVR layover. Unfortunately, I arrived in FRA 3 days before my luggage, fortunately, I always keep a couple days worth of clothes in the carry on.
